Program Summary

MD CAMP: Community, Access, Mentorship, and Purpose; is a two-week immersive day camp (9 am–4 pm) launching in Summer 2026. Students will attend lectures in biochemistry, histology, pathology, anatomy, nutrition, and clinical medicine. They will also gain an understanding of various medical subspecialties by shadowing a diverse group of UMass physicians in fields such as OBGYN, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, etc. Students will also have the opportunity to experience simulated medical scenarios through the UMass Interprofessional Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation (iCELS). These simulations will include point of care ultrasounds, intubation/airway management, wound care/suturing, phlebotomy, BLS/CPR, code simulators, and MedFlight. They will also build community and mentorship with UMass students and faculty.

Target Population

  1. MD CAMP is a hands-on outreach program for Worcester public high school (rising juniors and seniors) students who are curious about medicine and the journey to becoming a physician.
  2. Becoming a doctor takes planning, preparation, and support. MD CAMP is here to help you get started. Through this experience, you’ll gain insight into the path to medical school and explore opportunities that you may not otherwise have access to as high school students.

Objectives

  1. Experience a hands-on, immersive program designed to give you a realistic look at what medical training is actually like.
  2. Engage in a variety of dynamic, real-world clinical simulations at the UMass iCELS center, where you’ll practice essential skills such as using ultrasound, managing airways, performing sutures, drawing blood, responding to emergencies, and more.
  3. Build a meaningful, one-on-one mentorship relationship with a medical student who will provide guidance and support during the program and beyond.
  4. Develop relationships with other high school students who are passionate for careers in medicine.
