Neurocritical Care

Neurocritical CareOur team of board-certified Neurocritical Care specialists is comprised of neurologists with expertise in treating critically-ill patients with traumatic brain injury, ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, spinal cord injury, seizures and status epilepticus and disorders of consciousness, as well as autoimmune, infectious, neuromuscular and other types of acute neurological illness. As intensivists, we take a comprehensive approach which includes management of multiorgan dysfunction, advanced monitoring and peri-operative care. Beyond stabilization and resuscitation, we focus on prevention of secondary neurological injury and neuroprognostication in order to maximize each patient's potential for recovery.

Outside of direct patient care, our physician-scientist faculty is dedicated to research advancing the field, including interests in stroke, traumatic brain injury, electroencephalography, shared decisionmaking and molecular biology. To this end, we participate in local and multicenter clinical trials. In accordance with the educational missions of the UMass Chan Medical School and the Neurology Department, we provide robust learning experiences to medical students, advanced practice providers, residents and fellows via rotations and an accredited Neurocritical Care fellowship.

UMASS NeuroICU at UmassMemorial Medical Center

UMassMemorial Health Care (UMMHC) is the clinical partner of UMass Chan and located directly on the UMass Chan campus in Worcester. UMMHC is the largest health care system and the only level 1 trauma center in Central MA. UMMHC has a trauma area encompassing a 63-mile radius with its referral region extending to the borders of New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. UMMHC has an effective catchment area of nearly 1 million individuals. UMMHC’s neuroICU is the only specialized neuro-trauma intensive care unit (neuroICU) in MA. Uniquely at UMMHC, all patients with neurotrauma, including poly-traumas, are admitted to the neuroICU attending’s care. The ICU operates under the “closed-ICU model” in which intensivists provide triage and care and develop a very close relationship with the patient families. It is a state-of-the-art 16-bed ICU opened in 2006 providing multimodality monitoring and a portable head CT. Four board-certified neurology-trained neurointensivists and a surgical trauma intensivist attend in UMMHC’s neuroICU.
